Paperwork & Procedures

1)  Research your destination

  • General information: language, climate, geography, politics, religion, culture
  • Healthcare system: resources, public/private, training, pandemics
  • Check for travel warnings: electives in countries where Foreign Affairs Canada has issued a Level 3 “Avoid non-essential travel” advisory will not be approved

2)  Prepare your elective objectives

  • 5-10 key goals that you feel will be attainable during your elective time
  • Objectives should be in keeping with CanMEDS objectives for pediatric residency training

3)  Notify the Program Directors of your interest

  • Residents wishing to pursue an extended 3- or 6-month elective must submit a letter of intent along with the application form by the appropriate due date (normally >1 year before hand).  The application form will be available on this website when the selection process for the following year begins.
  • For all other electives, the Program Directors must receive your initial application a minimum of 6 months in advance (see form below)
  • Details of your elective must be received & approved at least 4 months prior to your elective

4)  Contact the on-site elective preceptor

  • Investigate the possibilities (this may take several weeks, especially if email/internet access is poor in your area of interest)

5)  Complete required paperwork
